United Autosports Make A Point In Both Belgian Races To End Season On Encouraging Note

United Autosports brought the curtain down on its maiden FIA GT3 European Championship season at Zolder (Belgium) today (Sunday October 10).

The American-owned team claimed two, top-10 placings in the two final rounds of the 12-race series which began in May – just two months after the American-owned, British-based outfit was formed – at the historic 2.492-mile track in Heusden-Zolder near Brussels.

United Autosports, which will contest the 2011 FIA GT3 European Championship with two Audi R8 LMS sports cars, finished 12th in the FIA GT3 Teams Championship. In the Audi Manufacturer's Cup, Guasch/Patterson finished third with Bell/Brown seventh.

Race 1 (Sunday)
Qualifying: 8th #22 Patterson, 1m 33.380s; 11th #23 Brown, 1m 33.592s. Weather: Sunny, warm.
Race Result: 10th (#22) +24.951s P1; 17th (#23), -7 laps. Weather: Sunny, cool.

Mark Patterson began the opening one-hour race held under unseasonably warm sunshine, from eighth place on the grid having claimed his personal best qualifying position of the season the previous day, but the sun wasn’t shining on Zak Brown.

Having made a poor start, Brown went in to the tight Turn 1 left-hander aggressively but made side-on contact with a Ford GT40 which spun him in to the gravel trap. Zak lost three laps as his Audi R8 LMS was retrieved and then further time after a cautionary visit to the pits to check for damage, the #23 Audi resuming at the tail of the field in 24th place.

Zak handed over to Matt Bell on 27mins from 21st place with Patterson bringing the fifth-placed #22 Audi in for co-driver Michael Guasch with 26mins remaining in the thick of the mandatory pit-stop action, Michael resuming 13th.

Guasch took the checker placed 10th after a good, consistent drive on the tail of a three-car dice for eighth position. Meanwhile, Bell, set lap times quicker than the top-10 cars in the latter stages.

Race 2 (Sunday)
Qualifying: 13th #23 Bell, 1m 32.909s; 18th #22 Guasch, 1m 33.703s. Weather: Sunny, warm.
Race Result: 9th (#23) +50.301s P1; 12th (#22) +61.6 P1. Weather: Sunny, warm.

Bell slipped a place in the opening laps embroiled in a six-car battle for ninth while Guasch, who had moved up to 17th slipped four places with 20mins run after a spin but handed over to Patterson placed 14th at mid-distance, the #22 Audi resuming in 20th.

The ninth-placed #23 Audi headed to the pits with 26mins remaining, Brown rejoining the race in 14th position. Both United Autosports Audi R8 LMS sports cars spectacularly made up positions in the closing 15mins, despite Brown being pushed off by another car from behind in to a gravel trap at the chicane earlier in his stint. Patterson chased down the race leader, successfully unlapping himself after contact with the lead Ford GT40 – a maneuver deemed completely legal by race officials – to finish 12th.

Brown moved into 10th place on the penultimate lap and then claimed ninth at the flag after an audacious move around the outside of a Corvette in the final series of corners.

#22 Molecule / Cerutti – Audi R8 LMS
Michael Guasch (USA).  Lives: Walnut Creek, California, USA:
“I took over from Mark in Race 1 who had done a great job. I got to run with the ‘fast’ group and it felt good – it went very, very well. The Audi was excellent today – an absolute joy to drive and I held my own and got a shot for the top-10.

“I just couldn’t find the speed in qualifying the previous day despite the balance of the Audi being good and so started Race 2 in 18th. I made a clean start and ran a good pace until I overshot a turn, hit the curb which spun me around which was frustrating. It was a dumb mistake but the brakes were fading which caught me out.

“I quickly learned that the championship was a very serious, respectable and competitive series. My low point was Silverstone where we were faced with the harsh reality that we were not as competitive as we’d hoped due to the Audi being ‘neutered’ because of the Balance of Power [BoP] handicap. The high point was Portimão when Mark and I scored a top-10 finish, the first FIA race after our Audi was given some power back.”

Mark Patterson (USA).  Lives: Bronxville, New York State, USA:
“Once into a rhythm in the first race I got in some good, fast laps but I didn’t race well enough in the opening stages and lost a couple of positions. I started eighth and Mike brought the Audi home 10th equaling our best race result of the season – Mike gets all the credit for racing so well on ‘old’ tires.

“Mike battled well in what seemed to be pretty much an incident-free opening to Race 2 but when I was driving, there were yellow flags everywhere with lots of things going on and was pretty chaotic. Despite losing time due to not being able to overtake caused by the yellows, I clawed in some places – the pace of the Audi real good at the end again.

“My biggest disappointment this season was the Balance of Power adjustments, or lack of them, but the FIA got there in the end and our fantastic Audi sports car was then able to fight for top-10 placings. I’ve enjoyed racing on some of Europe’s finest tracks, including revisiting the incomparable Spa, and the new, exciting and highly challenging Portimão track. My biggest surprise was how deep the field of driving talent has been – I imagined, and had hoped (!) there would have been more ‘Bronze’ graded drivers. Best moment was for Mike and I to score United Autosports’ first championship point. Meanwhile our Audi has been flawless mechanically all season.”

#23 Remington – Audi R8 LMS
Zak Brown (USA).  Lives: Carmel, Indiana, USA:
“My qualifying was a bit sloppy and never got in a good lap then I got a terrible start in the opening race which really sucked which then went from bad to worse at Turn 1. I hit a Ford GT40 being too aggressive and ended up in the ‘kitty litter’ which took an age to get towed out. Although we were able to continue our race was effectively over and I felt terrible for Matt.

“I had a whole lot of fun in the second race and the Audi was just great again in the closing laps. Unfortunately I got hit from behind by a Ford GT40 so that cost me some time and re-take the cars I’d already overtaken. Unfortunately there were a lot of yellows [flags] so I couldn’t pass on half the track. I’m happy to finish the season in the points again – we were strong in our last three races so I’m already looking forward to next year.

“What I’ve learnt in the last five months is that this series is one of the toughest and most competitive racing championships in the world. I’ve been surprised just how difficult the competition has been with the lowest point coming at Silverstone when it became blatantly obvious just how long it was going to take us to become competitive. But it’s been a whole bunch of fun with our rostrum finish at Portimão the obvious highlight.”

Matthew Bell (GB). Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England:
“I struggled a bit in qualifying but sat down with my engineer and looked over the data but Race 1 effectively became another test session after Zak’s first corner incident meant we weren’t really in the race. I made a good start in Race 2 and fought hard. We were all close together but it’s very difficult to overtake as the track is so narrow making it easy to defend.

“It’s been a very tough, full first year for me. The biggest surprise was the level of competition when we arrived for the opening races at Silverstone. After that weekend in early May, I soon realized it was going to be a hard year. But I've also learnt a lot – about the Audi R8 LMS, about the circuits and about the team – which can only help me next year when I will do British GT and the FIA series again. Failing to finish three races were the low points of the season while not surprisingly the podium at Portimão is the obvious stand out moment of the year for me.”

Richard Dean (GB), Managing Director & Co-Owner of United Autosports:
“Qualifying was disappointing – a very average performance – although Mark produced a fine effort. The opening race was short-lived for the #23 Audi when Zak made a slow start at the green light and suffered a collision at the first corner. After that it became a ‘test’ for that car. Mark did a solid job to keep the #22 Audi in touch with the top-10 when he handed over to Mike in what was effectively the fast group of ‘gold’ rated drivers. Mike held his own there and went on to score another championship point and I’m delighted for them both, they did a really good job.

“The #22 Audi spun while the #23 Audi was pushed off the track in Race 2 which cost us places but both finished strongly. Mike and Mark were really strong. Matt did a solid job before Zak got hit pretty hard in to a spin which cost us a top-five but he got himself back into the points.

“We have shown an improvement over the year which is very pleasing. We’ll come back next year bigger and stronger. The biggest thing I’ve learnt this year is that the FIA GT3 series is very, very tough and not to pre-judge our competitiveness before the first official qualifying session of the year – otherwise you can only be disappointed! But we didn’t panic and once the BoP was actually balanced it came together for us.

“I’m very proud of what Zak and my team has achieved it its first season and the hard work they’ve put in while maintaining a good sense of humor and great atmosphere. On-track watching Zak stick the Audi on the front row in Portugal and proving to everyone we finally had found our true pace was a lovely moment. Matt showing he has star quality in the making. But the progress of all four drivers this year and how positive and supportive they have been. And of course Spa, although not part of the FIA series, the end of the 24 Hour race left me with mixed feelings. I was on a high for finishing third and fourth in class in our first ever 24 hour race but also felt a little low knowing we were so close to winning GT3.”

AUDI CUSTOMER TEAM COMBINES U.S. MARKETING AND U.K. TECHNICAL RESOURCES<BR><BR>      ZIONSVILLE, IN (October 2, 2009) – Pending formal FIA approval, the 2010 FIA GT3 European Championship is expected to feature a notably American accent through the newly launched United Autosports race team, it was announced today. The team will field two factory-assisted Audi R8 LMS racecars, according to co-owner and driver, American Zak Brown. <BR><BR>    Brown, 37, is hardly a stranger to international motorsports. He raced his way across Europe in multiple open wheel series during his twenties. He has since become a renowned international racing insider as the founder and CEO of U.S.-based Just Marketing International (JMI), the world's leading motorsports-exclusive marketing agency. United Autosports' on-track efforts will be supported with JMI's full-service resources, applied principally to promoting the team's sponsors on both sides of the Atlantic. <BR><BR>    For Brown, the return to competition on Europe's legendary road courses is literally a dream come true. <BR><BR>    "I wasn't much beyond a kid when I first came to Europe," recalled Brown. "No bankroll for racing, no sure prospects. I lived hand-to-mouth, saw the Old World and raced on legendary circuits. I matured as a driver and a businessman through those experiences. Now, returning as owner of a new well-prepared team is magic." <BR><BR>    "In creating United Autosports there were a number of different series we considered," said Brown. "FIA GT3 was an easy choice as it is respected, well-run and offers fierce competition among many of the world's prestige performance car brands. Beyond that, it provides a nice runway for upward migration to FIA GT1 or the LeMans Series."<BR><BR>    Brown's first order of business was the creation of the team itself. For that, he turned to long-time friend and previous driver teammate, Britain's Richard Dean. As United Autosports' co-owner and Managing Director, Dean, 44, is the chief architect of the team's preparation and execution on and off the race track. In addition to a distinguished career as a driver, including single-seaters, saloon cars and GT cars, Dean has additionally served as managing director of Ginetta Cars, the largest volume racing car manufacturer in Great Britain. A former winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans as a driver (GT2, 2006), he has also served as the Director of Zytek Engineering, a Le Mans Prototype chassis manufacturer and suppliers to the F3000 series.<BR><BR>    "My role is quite simple," said Dean. "Put in place a soundly-organized racing operation with a mind toward future expansion. Knowing Zak Brown for a long time and watching what he has created in the motorsports commercial space, I'm excited to have the opportunity to complement that by building a similar caliber racing enterprise." <BR><BR>    According to Dean, United Autosports will first focus on the FIA GT3 series, but in time will consider other opportunities in motor racing, including running an initially limited schedule of events in vintage racing events in North America.<BR><BR>    "Given our start-up position, we are very fortunate to be aligned with Audi," he said. "Their sports car racing heritage is legendary and their premium global brand position is complimentary to our own goals for United Autosports."<BR><BR>    Adding to the race team's managerial depth is John Della Penna, who serves as Sporting Director. No stranger to personally fielding high-profile teams including in CART, IRL, and Ferrari Challenge among others, the veteran Della Penna will preside over various special projects for the team including vintage racing.<BR><BR>    Also on the managerial team is John Hogan, who serves as Commercial Director. Throughout his lengthy motorsports career, Hogan has directly contributed to the development and professionalism of the modern motorsports industry. Hogan's experience includes 30 years at Philip Morris as Vice President, Marketing and Sales and directing the world's largest single-brand portfolio in racing, the "Marlboro Red" branding.<BR><BR>    Along with producing a solid sponsorship base, Brown's priorities include securing top-shelf drivers for the remaining seats on the two-car team. To that end, he said he will have an especially keen eye for recruiting other American drivers, but mindful of securing the overall best available talent. <BR><BR>    Besides Brown himself, another of the team's driver seats has been filled by talented Argentinean Pablo Perez Companc. A winning campaigner in both sports car and open wheel competition, Companc's career was temporarily side-lined after suffering substantial lower extremity injuries in a 2007 Firestone Indy Lights crash at Homestead Miami Speedway. Now recovered, he joins the team after recent successful forays in the Ferrari Challenge North American and Argentina's GT 2000 tours.<BR><BR><BR>      ABOUT UNITED AUTOSPORTS<BR>    United Autosports is a U.S.-owned professional auto racing team and motorsports development business based in Yorkshire, England. United Autosports Aiming High For European Championship Grand Finalé

·       Audi “official” customer team will arrive in Belgium on crest of a wave

United Autosports aims to sign off from its maiden FIA GT3 European Championship campaign in style when it contests the final two races of the season at Zolder (Belgium) next month (October 10).

Formed earlier this season, the American-owned team found the opening rounds of the ultra-competitive 12-race series unsurprisingly difficult – entirely predictable considering its one British and three American drivers had not seen, let alone raced, at almost all of the demanding and technical European tracks.

The unfavorable “Balance of Power” restrictions implemented from the start of the season in May on the Audi R8 LMS sports car, which had won the 2009 FIA GT3 title in its début year, by the series organizers additionally caused the British-based team to struggle in terms of outright pace.

But with the Audi’s performance handicap reduced, United Autosports immediately made its mark at the most recent races in Portugal (September 18-19). Zak Brown (USA), Chairman and Co-Owner of United Autosports plus driver of the #23 Audi, achieved the team’s best ever qualifying position (second place). Co-driver Matt Bell (GB) and #22 Audi pilot Michael Guasch (USA) both claimed their personal best qualifying positions (sixth). Guasch and #22 co-driver Mark Patterson (USA) netted United Autosports’ maiden championship point in Race 1 (10th). Then Brown and Bell combined to score a fabulous rostrum finish (third) in Race 2.

These stunning results mean United Autosports heads for Belgium and the final two 60-minute races, unusually staged on the same day, on the crest of a wave. The Circuit Zolder, also known as Circuit Terlaemen, is an undulating 2.492-mile track in Heusden-Zolder, positioned 50-mile west of Brussels.

Built in 1963, Zolder hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix on 10 occasions in the 1970s and ‘80s when the F1 “circus” deemed Spa-Francorchamps, a venue where United Autosports finished third and fourth (GT3) in the 24 Hour race this summer, too fast and dangerous.

#22 Molecule / Cerutti – Audi R8 LMS
Michael Guasch (USA).  Lives: Walnut Creek, California, USA:
“Despite never having been to Zolder, after our best finish and showing yet in the series in our last races [Algarve], I am very, very excited about the Zolder races.  Now with the Audi being competitive, we should have a very good chance of a top-10 placing again at the very least.”

Mark Patterson (USA).  Lives: Bronxville, New York State, USA:
“With the series’ homologation efforts now largely in balance, the top-10 features; a great cross section of top class brands. This gives us great hope for Audi doing as well as we did in Portugal last month but there’s real depth of high quality drivers and this series produces seriously exciting races. I’ve only previously ‘visited’ Zolder on YouTube. Any racing fatality makes an impact on all of us emotionally, especially when greats like Gilles Villeneuve are taken away. The only silver lining is track and vehicle safety improvements derived from these tragedies.”

#23 Remington – Audi R8 LMS
Zak Brown (USA).  Lives: Carmel, Indiana, USA:
“Our team’s performance has improved with every race and we arrive in Belgium fresh from achieving our best qualifying and race results of the season. Portugal gave me the greatest pleasure so far – our podium and a front row qualifying position was pretty cool. I'm optimistic we can further improve and get both cars in the points and on to the podium. The championship is a lot tougher than I expected but we’ve made huge progress. I raced at Zolder about 16 years ago in an Opel Lotus single-seater. From what I recall, it was a fun but dangerous track for the brave!”

Matthew Bell (GB). Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England:
“It’s always a challenge going to a new circuit but I’m very hopeful that we can be as competitive in Belgium as we were at Portimão and claim more points to finish the season off on a high note haul. Our Portimão podium has given me a taste of success and I want more. I’m hoping we can keep the momentum going forward in the final rounds.”

Richard Dean (GB), Managing Director & Co-Owner of United Autosports:
“The drivers [once again] do not know the [Zolder] circuit but it should suit the Audi R8 LMS. It is very, very hard on brakes and that is one of the Audi’s strong points. I hope the drivers can build on our Portimão positives and carry this new found confidence with them in to Zolder.

“I have been to Zolder several times with my previous Formulae Ford and Renault teams but only ever raced there once, in a 24 hour GT race driving a Ginetta two years ago. Unfortunately, Zolder is probably best remembered as the place Gilles Villeneuve lost his life during qualifying at the 1982 Belgian GP. I think that had an impact on everybody in motorsport. I love the circuit but hate the inappropriately pathetic tribute to Villeneuve placed closed to the circuit’s race control building.”

Audi R8 LMS (Sportscar according to latest 2010 FIA GT3 regulations)
V10 5.2-liter engine, 4 valves per cylinder, petrol direct injection, emission control by two racing catalytic converters, rear-wheel-drive, traction control (ASR), sequential pneumatic activated 6-speed sport gearbox with shift-paddles, Audi Space Frame (ASF) made of aluminum with bolted steel roll-cage, carbon-fiber composite/aluminum bodywork, Michelin radial tires. Start weight 1,335kg. Limitation at 8500rpm for every gear. Developed by Audi Sport with cooperation from quattro GmbH. Won FIA GT3 European Championship, ADAC-GT Masters and Belgian GT Championship plus Nürburgring 24 Hours and Spa 24 Hours class victories in début 2009 season scoring a total 23 victories. United Autosports achieved third and fourth places on the team’s 24 hour race début in the 2010 Spa 24 Hours and its first FIA GT3 European Championship top-three finish in Portugal (19 Sep).

United Autosports Claims FIA GT3 European Championship Podium Finish

· American-owned team achieves its first "top-three" result in latest race
· Guasch & Patterson prove a point for team in opening Portuguese race
· Chairman & Co-Owner Brown attains team's maiden front row start position

Zak Brown (left) and Matt Bell celebrate United Autosports’ maiden FIA GT3 European Championship podium finish
United Autosports came of age in the latest rounds of the FIA GT3 European Championship at the Autodr ómo Internacional do Algarve circuit near Portimão (POR) this weekend (September 18-19).

The official Audi "customer" team finally claimed its first championship silverware when Zak Brown and Matt Bell swept their Audi R8 LMS to a magnificent third place – a mere 8.356secs behind the winner – in Sunday's one-hour race after 33-laps around the technical 2.92-mile Portuguese track.

Team-mates Michael Guasch and Mark Patterson scored United Autosports' maiden championship point 24 hours earlier while underlining the British-based team's competitiveness, Brown achieved a front row start position for Saturday's opening one-hour race.

United Autosports contests the final two rounds of the FIA GT3 European Championship at Zolder (Belgium) over October 9-10.

Race 1 (Saturday)
Qualifying: 2nd #23 Brown, 1m 46.575s; 6th #22 Guasch, 1m 47.176s. Weather: Sunny, hot.
Race Result: 10th (#22) +48.074s P1; Retired - mechanical (#23). Weather: Sunny, hot.

The ninth round of the 12-race series witnessed the team's best qualifying performance of the season with Brown impressively claiming a front row position – only being denied pole-position by 0.153secs in the final five minutes with Guasch getting bumped down three places to sixth in the closing moments.

But the one-hour race began disastrously when Brown was hit from behind at the first corner moments after the green light resulting in little bodywork damage to the Audi R8 LMS but effectively ruining the race for the #23 Audi. Brown resumed half a lap down at the back of the 23-car field and handed over to Bell in 21st with 33mins remaining only for Bell, now 20th, to roll to a standstill nine minutes later with a mechanical gremlin – a likely legacy of the opening lap impact.

Guasch made a flying start and pressed for fourth place in the opening laps, the American running very strongly in fifth place until he too was punted from behind off the track and into a spin on lap six, dropping to 13th position. Gausch pitted to Patterson placed third during the compulsory pit-stop phase on 30mins with Mark running strongly, setting the #22 Audi's fastest lap 15mins from the checker which he took in 11th place – less than four seconds behind the sixth-placed finisher. Amended results were later issued which saw Guasch/Patterson classified 10th earning United Autosports its maiden FIA GT3 European Championship points.

Race 2 (Sunday)
Qualifying: 6th #23 Bell, 1m 46.095s; 20th #22 Patterson, 1m 47.442s. Weather: Sunny, hot.
Race Result: 3rd (#23) +8.356s P1; 14th (#22) +54.494s P1. Weather: Sunny, very hot.

Bell lined-up on the grid in sixth place following a seven-hour engine change the previous evening – his personal best qualifying position of the season – with a time that would have comfortably earned the British youngster "pole" in Race 1 despite only having clocked up three "flying laps" prior to Saturday's qualifying session.

Matt completed the opening lap in ninth but ran eighth for much of his stint before handing over to Brown in sixth position with 25mins to run. The American spun at Turn 1 early in his stint, dropping three places to ninth, but drove superbly thereafter to snatch third place in the final three minutes and close to within 1.754secs of the second-placed car at the finish.

Patterson spun 20mins into the race and handed over to Guasch placed 19th with 29mins on the clock, Michael consistently setting competitive times to be the fastest car on the track in the closing stages to haul himself in to a creditable 14th by the finish.

Michael Guasch (USA). Lives: Walnut Creek, California, USA:
"Qualifying for Race 1 went very well and I comfortably achieved my best-ever start position. I made a great jump at the green light and spent the opening laps hounding a Ferrari which I just couldn't find a way past but was then hit up the back pretty hard which spun me around off the track. I put my head down and reeled them back in and my car's performance was great as my stint went on. We started from near the back of the grid in Race 2 and despite picking up a couple a seconds each lap, it was too much time to make up but the car was just great and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. This weekend was the first time that I arrived with previous track knowledge after testing here at the beginning of the year. We had car capable of mixing it at the front due to the latest Balance of Performance changes since Ricard which allowed the team and I to show our true potential."

Mark Patterson (USA). Lives: Bronxville, New York State, USA:
"Mike handed me a great car in the opening race with the Dunlop tires standing up real well which allowed me to set our car's fastest lap time late on. I also had a good tussle with a Ferrari but like Mike, was all over him in the corners but found it difficult to get past on the straight-aways. I had a spin coming out of the last sweeper in Sunday's race which could have ultimately cost Mike and I a second top-10 result of the weekend. The Audi was fabulous allowing me to claw back some positions that I lost at the start. It's just a shame that I qualified down where I did."

Zak Brown (USA). Lives: Carmel, Indiana, USA:
"Race 1 promised so much but delivered nothing. The pole-starting Corvette and I both had terrible starts, the Pace Car seemed to bring us around very slowly and as soon as the race started we were engulfed and I took a hit from behind. It was very disappointing and frustrating after achieving our first front row start – after that I just tried to keep my cool. I took over from Matt in Race 2 and rejoined just in front of three cars already up to speed and I made a mistake and spun at Turn 1. That cost around 10secs and we finished eight behind the winner at the checker! The rest of the stint was brilliant and I was comfortably catching the guys ahead in the closing stages – it was great fun. Richard [Dean] and the entire team have done a fantastic job in our first season and I'm delighted with the Audi R8 LMS. We arrived here on the back of a rostrum finish in the 24 Hours of Spa and have achieved a front row start, scored our first top-three finish while the #22 Audi scored our first ever championship point yesterday so a tremendous weekend for United Autosports.”

Matthew Bell (GB). Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England:
“The Audi was difficult to drive when I took over from Zak in Race 1, something had obviously been damaged in the first lap impact. Despite this I quickly caught a group ahead of me but the handling was horrible and I couldn’t challenge them before the car suddenly lost all power and drive. The opening lap of Sunday’s race was hectic and I lost three places. It was nervous under braking and steering after I struggled to get enough heat in to the front tires. That resolved itself but late in to my stint the rear was nervous – possibly the tire pressures were too high and I was very conscious of looking after the rubber for Zak’s stint. It’s a great feeling to finally step onto the rostrum.”

Richard Dean (GB), Managing Director & Co-Owner of United Autosports:
“I couldn’t be happier for Zak [Brown] and it’s great to repay Audi’s faith in us. Saturday’s race was a massive disappointment. With ours cars starting from rows one and three, it’s fair to say we expected at least one podium. The Pace Car brought the field around very slowly and the momentum was with the guys behind Zak and the pole-sitter. Zak was tapped from behind so that was race over for the #23 Audi which later retired with a mechanical issue. Mike ran a strong opening stint despite also getting hit while Mark, running with some very quick drivers, set lap times comparable with the top-10 runners. On Sunday, the #22 Audi had a lot to do starting from where it did. Mark had good pace but suffered a spin at a corner which caught out a number of other cars. Mike set some unbelievably good times and was the fastest guy out there at the end. Zak and Matt had a car capable of winning the race and but for Zak’s spin, we probably would have but I’m not going to complain – we’ll take a third and build on it for the final two races in Belgium. Matt drove a solid opening stint, keeping his cool after losing a couple of places at the start and quickly got in to a good rhythm which is the mark of a good driver. Meanwhile Zak drove a fantastic race – he’s so committed to this program and this result is a great reward.”
